Cajun Sayings
Basically born and raised in South Louisiana, we have some coined terms / or dialect terms that are used here, that aren’t used ANYWHERE else in the world! And THAT is all kinds of awesome
I had the BRILLIANT idea to share with you some of my favorite sayings
Feel free to use them too!
Brittany’s Cajun terms:
1) Cher- meaning darling, sweetie, honey, or cute!
It’s spelt cher, like the singer/not so great actress; but it’s pronounced shaaa. Using a long held “a” sound.
One might say, “That baby is so cher.” Meaning that baby is so cute.
Cher can also be used in speaking with one’s significant other
2) Mais lah- simply translated uh yes or oh gosh.
One might say at the end of the work day when exhausted, “mais lah”
3) ga de don- interesting explaining this one.
The best translation would be– oh em gee/oh my gosh. I use it quite often when exhausted and frustrated
4) poo yai– another interesting one.
Used best to translate for exhaustion ha. “Poo yai i’m tired cher.”
5) You passed a good time? Meaning, did you have a good time?
6) Do you wanna get down?
This is way more of a Acadiana / Lafayette phrase. It means when you go to the restaurant/drive thru/ movie theater- do you wanna get down? No not as in do you wanna dance? But it means do you want to get out of the car?
People seem to love this when i say and they laugh, no i don’t want to dance. Well i do
but do you want to get out of the car?!
Another wonderful cultural lesson
Do you have certain sayings/phrases you use that you were brought up saying?

I love learning about different words or sayings that are used in different areas.
I used the term “cold snap” to refer to a brief cold spell last year here in TX. My boyfriend looked at me like I was nuts! We use it frequently in Ohio!
I could definitely use a “cold snap” right now! It’s sooo dang hawt.
Those are so funny! I think every area has it’s own sayings…people around here say “hella” a lot….”it’s hella cold out” or “that is hella awesome!”. I’ve been told it’s a northern california thing…I try not to say it because it gets annoying! haha
haha that’s funny
I use it every now and then, but it’s not one of my main things!
I have always loved cajun culture…thanks for sharing cher!
You’re welcome
I know i would be a COMPLETELY different person, if i wasn’t raised in South Louisiana!
Thats cool – I dont think we really have any sayings here.
There are lots in my family, but most of them relvolve around profanity. Im not sure what that says about us . . .
thanks ma’am
Well you’ve got a great family i’m sure!
#6 is totally a lafayette thing because every time you, lindsey, or lauren say it, i’m like huh?
my dad always calls us a “couyon” when we do something silly. i think it’s a “down da bayou” thing.
haha
And couyon in cajun french means crazy! I forgot about that one! It’s definitely NOT just a down the bayou thing!
Don’t forget when we say to “save” something, meaning to put it away. I always get teased for that. Also, calling someone “canaille”, meaning that they’re so mischievous!
I know there are so many other things we say here, I just can’t think of them at the moment!
yes! Keep ‘em coming Melis! I wanna do a part 2
LOVE THIS!
“Get down” is also a Hispanic thing. One of my college roommates is Cuban and she would say this all the time. The first time she said I nearly fell out off my seat from laughing. I was so confused. Hee!
yay
that’s awesome!
All so true! #6 is the only one I really say though! I’m sure I do my share of weird sayings!
Py-eyed -drunk
Mais no – means no
And tons of French sayings C’est Bon – it’s good!
